Individual Cases of Environmental Preservation Activities
Planting in Relaxation Area
Saitama Works has planted in its employees’ relaxation area, called Shinsei-Hiroba or New Life Place, trees from the prefectures where its subsidiaries are located, to contribute to greening the premises and absorbing CO₂. Around the trees, a special type of material called “Eco Clean Soil” is used. It is mainly composed of natural soil and includes no hazardous materials. The lumpy soil absorbs and holds water well and repels weeds.
Environmental Preservation Activities
Pellet stove
Suwa Works is located in Fujimi-machi, Suwa-gun, Nagano, where the temperature drops to -10°C in winter. We formerly consumed fossil fuels for oil heaters, but now we use Shinshu-type pellet stoves, instead of oil heaters, in order to reduce energy consumption and protect environment and natural resources. Shinshu-type pellet stoves are developed by a local manufacturer as an official project organized by Nagano Prefecture, which aims to reduce fossil fuel use and curb unnecessary local logging, making use of local technologies
and thinned trees effectively. Unnecessary logging is an obstacle against reducing carbon dioxide emissions and is a contributing factor to the environmental degradation of the surrounding areas. Suwa Works is aiming at becoming a community-based and environmentally-conscious organization.
Features of Shinshu-type Pellet Stoves
The Shinshu-type pellet stove uses bullet-shaped fuels made from forest thinning materials. Fossil fuels are not used.
The forest thinning materials are generated in Nagano. Efficient use of local resources.
The pellet stove does not smoke as wood stoves do. Pellet fuels do not contain water and, therefore, burns at high
temperature, producing almost no smoke and carbon dioxide.
The fuels leave only a small amount of ash, which can also be recycled as good soil improvement agents.

Cooperative activities to maintain and improve green spaces
The City of Chigasaki, where Shonan Works is located, receives donations from citizens and companies for the acquisition, maintenance, and management of green spaces in the city, which are used to help finance the operation of such spaces. In support of the purpose of this city's initiative, Shonan Works conducts fundraising activities.
